FUTURE MARKERS
2016
gallery installation + on-site installation

A time capsule in reverse, a love letter of hopes, dreams, and fears created with Grade 6 & 7 students at Lord Strathcona Elementary School.

We take a walk. We find markers—plaques, statues, mosaics, murals—depicting events, buildings, and people. We listen to the stories of the city. We think of the future, our selves, our city. We imagine our selves and our city and wonder if future dreams will alter the actions and stories in the present. FUTURE MARKERS was also shared as a community walk with cake and performances on May 15, 2016.

A time capsule in reverse. A love letter of hopes, dreams and fears. A labyrinth of connectivity. Cause and Effect: Young People's Perspectives on Past, Present and Future is an exhibition presenting a selection of projects from Kindergarten to Grade 12 students from 9 different schools across BC that unpack the question, What effects do the different layers of history, place and context that construct our present have on our future? From engineering contraptions that produce a chain reaction to sound mapping, 1,717 students made insightful reflections about place, memory and myth, interpreting narratives from the past and present—and making their own for the future. What narratives will you make? What effects are you going to cause today? Cause and Effect is on display at the ArtStarts Gallery (808 Richards Street, Vancouver, BC, Canada) from February 25, 2017 to September 2, 2017.
